ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am looking for ways to express my inner landscape in the outside world. My work is less about what one sees than about the feeling that it leaves behind. My aesthetic training began with dance, transitioned to choreography and expanded to photography, video, text, mixed media, and performance art.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Ursula Scherrer is a Swiss artist established in the US. Her aesthetic training began with dance, transitioned to choreography, and expanded to photography, video, text, and mixed media. She is attracted to the ephemeral nature of past experiences as well as to how present times can be interpreted through artistic media.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Ingo Wendt’s artistic bearings are light art, architecture, and kinesis. He gets his inspiration from cultural realities, natural and urban landscapes as well as from architecture and historical places. His artworks, which often have a highly playful character, create beautiful atmospheres wherein colors become almost tactile matters. Even though this might not be his main focus, his interventions in public spaces have rarely failed to improve people’s ability to better value the urban and architectural environments they live in.

In my opinion, the positive result and impact of the INTERFERENCE festival in Tunis owed their success to powerful resonance, triggered by impulses of passion and optimism. This resonance managed to move many people and awaken their appreciation for an art form, which was previously unknown to them … a stone being thrown in to the water, the stone symbolising an impulse and the ripples the expanding resonance… I looking forward to SEE DJERBA, on our shared creative thirst, to our thirst for creative community … the driving force”

Both, audio and visual particles are animated to form a real-time environment. They are organized in groups that are linked in responding processes and that generate an endless series of variations in the present tense. The digital interaction is furthered through the application onto the architectural scape.

SITE Fondouk Ben Ghorbel

Fondouk Ben Ghorbel was found in the 17th century. Like many other, Fondouk Ben Ghorbel is a historical monument that served as a meeting point for commercial exchange and hosting sellers and traders who would gather from different countries, cultures, and religions in order to sell, buy, and exchange commodities from each other. The place kept its initial shape and still hosts workshops and shops.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Eva-Maria Joeressen and Klaus Kessner focus on transmedia interventions. They collect and analyze light and sound, spatial and temporal qualities of a chosen space. Reflecting on the dynamics of appearance and semantics, they contrast their findings with cultural-historical observations and associations. In their artistic research, they engender frameworks for audiovisual compositions and process them as a kind of dynamic archives. Their works are based on audio and visual instructions for a computer. Projected into an architectural environment, they engender a performative interplay of the artistic archive and the found space.

She finished her PHD in architecture on “Light Spaces – Spatial Models of Perception”. As an artist she is using various materials and media focusing on light and space. Her installations want to trigger the imagination of the viewer, who are furthermore invited to become participants of the artwork.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

ARTWORK

multi-channel projection of a site-specific collage

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I need to experience the world and communicate with people to create my artworks, that are usually set up in public spaces. My aim is to give way to the places and people that will interfere and communicate and give their own meaning to my art. SEE DJERBA is a project that works perfectly for me – it will give me the unique experience of living and working in a different cultural environment and I will have a chance to contribute my work and art to the local community. I think it is also important to see this project in a complex sociological and political perspective; as an artist from Poland it is important for me to show values essential not only in art but also in life – freedom and tolerance.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Robert Sochacki has been related to painting since his early days as a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, later as a set designer in a theatre and finally as a video performer / interactive artist. Nowadays he is a fellow in the painting department of Gdańsk’s Academy, and he finishes working on his PhD concerning art in public spaces. His projects were supported by polish Ministry of Culture and National Hertiage. He calls his works ”video paintings” and usually presents them as large-format projections. His video arts were showed and awarded multiple times – from independent art galleries, throughout many art shows in Poland and around the World, up to music and street art festivals. His paintings, installations and prints are usually a complex and multi-layered story about the world around.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Beauty, in my eyes, is highly underestimated in the arts nowadays. Beyond, above, or wherever content and messages there is a wide field of joy through beauty that everybody enjoys no matter what age, what cultural background, or what education we have. This uniting power is very often neglected and covered by messages and narrative content. In my work, I try to explore this power connected to the aspects of light. Individual perception is the starting point for my light art works. To have it as pure as possible I try to avoid any narrative content. Aspects of everyday perception become aware of the changes in time and people can enjoy the perception of their own perception.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The term public space sounds like an unfulfilled promise. Restrictive forces seem to work against what could be a sphere of interaction and free communication for a community and all its inhabitants. We just do not know what the public and its places are capable of, that’s why we want to interact and learn about.

ARTISTIC APPROACH
RaumZeitPiraten (Tobias Daemgen, Jan Ehlen, Moritz Ellerich) are a space and time bending artists collective. Since 2007 they create site-specific, performative installations as ephemeral models of imperfect mensch-maschine counter worlds questioning calculated realities, scientific accurateness and anorganic, machine dominated behaviour. With custom-built opto-acoustic instruments they are misusing and remixing ancient and up-to-date auditive and visual technologies for heterogeneous, organically improvised light and sound architectures. Their activities are aimed at playful, experimental connections of sound, image, object, space and time to an alternately-self-expanding-multimedia-performance-surround-spaceship-laboratory-travel to somewhere between science and fiction.

Getting to know the culture and the people through an art project like this, is the most beautiful way to connect with a place and its people. SEE Djerba will bring different people together who are driven by a passion about light, like me. I look forward to two exciting weeks in Djerba!

DRIFT
Material: 119 Silk threads, red
Light: Line Laser, Class 2, 635nm (red), 4×1,5 V

Seemingly fluent and slowly floating red lines appear in the dark space of an old weaving workshop. A subtle and thinly visible cascade of 119 silk threads in the projection of red laser light interplays with the wind blowing into the building. Relating to each change of wind environment outside of the workshop, the drifting curtain manifests itself and in the next moment disappears hurriedly in the deepness of space. Take a photo, if you want catch the game of red lines! Then, at this moment you will find a true story about the forgotten place, lost tradition, dusted machines, and unopened mails. In one of the oldest existing weaving workshops in Djerba, I reflect on the history of the old tradition of weaving under environmental aspects of modern time. Being for many years closed, I tried to re-organize the point of view on forgotten places and their lost tradition and tried to recall the rich potential of such places in the whole country. The development of the Artwork was of an explorative nature. I found fascinating stories about the island and the people living here. Each story is for me always a process and like a growing story in reality I like to implement such uncontrollable elements as the wind into my works. From this moment on the artwork starts to live its own life.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Light is the biggest mystery I met in my life. So elementary and at the same time so hard to catch. What is it, a phenomenon of light? I try to find a wide understanding of Light as a term and vision, it’s relation to life and human being. Reflecting on the complexity of light I try to express its simplicity in my artworks.

ARTIST’S FEEDBACK

As I was asked by Bettina Pelz and Aymen Gharbi to participate in SEE DJERBA project and to create a new work for public space in Djerba, I was excited to have a chance to work in such a multi-layered format. The aim was not only to create a new site-specific Artwork, it was a great opportunity to work with and in context-based environments, such as the cultural and historical heritage of the island or thru our cross-cultural and international group. Within one week and for the first time in Djerba, I had a chance to explore its deeper vision and to light on its spirit, which you may hardly discover with such intensity as an outstanding person. From the first moment on, I felt welcome and belonging to the place, and SEE DJERBA Team and the other artists. Our talk-rounds and discussions on the main topic helped me to reflect on my own practice and explore new ways to understand the subject of light in a wider sense. It was an intensive and inspiring time to look on the island from different shapes. I will never forget its friendly atmosphere by the local community, unique nature, and, especially the colors of the Djerbian sun. I could learn a lot from Djerbian’s rich culture and I liked our open dialog. I think the success of the project has been not made only by good results, but by integrating transcultural processes as well. I think SEE Djerba was a good format for growing up for new processes in the local environment and needs to be sustained for the future development of the island.

SITE

Place Sidi Abdelkader

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The bulbs act as a visual metaphor. This work is based on the misappropriation of our senses, by evoking them, questioning them, and putting them on first. Make the senses the equivalent of a material. The voices and noises are now transformed into code and the luminous noises are simulated. The light evokes not ears but eyes, eyes that touch and hear. This cycle can be defined as a round trip of spectator’s presence, and in this way how the sources of light belong to the artwork and either to the spectator. This installation becomes an “operator of sense“, following an expression of Jacques Aumont. This means that the work is auto-exposing, auto-present, and auto-generating.

ARTIST’S FEEDBACK

Djerba was an inspiring place to work in and to question all its historical, abandoned places and corner, and to get in contact with some Djerbian people knowing and learning from them their stories and traditions. SEE DJERBA was a success for all of us, ten days passed away but we kept the wonderful moments, even if we have been through stressful and difficult moments. For me, it was great to work at “Place Sidi Abdelkader” which has been a coffee shop before. I was intrigued by the idea that the place was a place where people used to meet, drink, play cards, and talk. For a while, it has been an abandoned place. It brought the idea to work on “collective memory” to revive this place in a different context. I made a box where people could leave a message. When talking to the box, the lighting of the space started to change. I was excited about people leaving messages about their life, dreams, hopes, and others start to singing, yelling. And this is what interested me the most, the idea about connection, and interaction between people and the artwork.

The starting point for my artwork “Luminous Vanishing” were old slides that I found. These slides were photographed by a German couple traveling to Djerba and Tunis during the 1970s. During my stay in Houmt Souk, I started to modify the picture. physically and irreversible. I wanted to leave traces, erase memories, and look for what might be hidden in the material.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

For SEE DJERBA, I was able to participate as an artist. During the week I was free to explore the new surrounding, meeting new people, and starting to work on my own project. The week I had (only the one before the festival) was too short for all the possibilities which were offered (talks, workshops, etc.). My intent was to realize a site-specific work in Djerba that reflects my impressions of exploring a new and unfamiliar space. During my stay I started a new way for me to work with the found photographic material, furthermore, it is my first work with a diascope.

In the past two years, I have had the opportunity to visit Tunisia several times, working there as an artist and exhibiting my artworks. With the exhibition project FLUX at the Goethe-Institute Tunis in 2015, I learned how energetic and positive co-operation with Tunisians can be. My intent was to discover a place with my artistic view, to implement it in my work and to present it in the public space.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT :
Last year Bettina and Aymen told me about the great art festival they made in Tunes, which reminded me about the initiatives I had made in my homeland, Venezuela. I got excited just by hearing them talking, it felt really familiar. Now, I was told that this second experience exists due the motivation of the people and that the idea is to offer an alternative cultural place for and with Tunisians in Djerba. No further words needed to be said for me to accept this incredible -personal- challenge, were I would not get to be in the organizing team, but instead I will be in the artistic group. To Djerba I am bringing my energy, my -short- experience as an architect and my spirit as an activist, in order to interact with this new context. In this exchange experience I am hopping to leave one ephemeral part of me in Djerba and in my new colleagues; I will take home the conceptual challenges and learnings of this cultural space.

ARTISTIC APPROACH
After graduating from the architecture school in 2011, Mariandreina Baasch has been working on different projects that open a space for dialogue in the society. The idea is using art in public spaces to express -freely- the socio-political problems of Venezuela.

ARTWORK

DECODING (Djerba 2017)
1-channel architecture projection

The work is based on the text of the new constitution of Tunisia from 2014, which is considered one of the most progressive in the world. The French version of the text is transferred into the computer code “base64” and the visual output was used as a base of the main animation. Occasionally, selected Arabic phrases are included. The color concept responds to the colors red and white as the main colors of the Tunisian flag. The animation treats the text as a living organism.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

For more than twenty years Detlef Hartung and Georg Trenz have been working with architectural interventions with typography. In their spatial projections, they explore the relationship among text, image, public space, light and sensory perception. With their textual projections they have animated buildings such as churches, theaters and galleries. Their facades or interiors appear to be set in constant transformation due to the interaction of the projected content, the architectural structures and the viewers’ position.

ARTISITS’ STATEMENT

Although I can’t be physically in Djerba this year due to a health problem I want to be part of this wonderful project which is in my eyes a great opportunity to continue the efforts which started two years ago in Tunis at the Goethe-Institute and were followed by INTERFERENCE in the Medina of Tunis in 2016. I was really deeply touched by the hospitality and openness of the new colleagues and friends. For us as artists, projected text is a possibility to discover and react to an unknown place. Let’s continue this dialogue by the means of light!

WE PROMISE YOU
white textile thread, glue, uv-light

The artwork is made of white threads illuminated by uv-light. The threaded structure is applied to the wooden structure of the former salt storage. From only one perspective the Arabic text can be read, when moving through space, the word is bend and distorted, losing its readability. The message of the installation is addressed to politicians and their demagogic discourses, which, as an anamorphosis, from an angle of view appear clear and promising, but quickly lose all their senses as soon as one turns away. Then by discovering the work, the visitor is invited to look for the location of visibility, to observe the message, and to decipher it.

SITE Mediterranean Cultural Center

The storage building dates back to 1908 and served as a public treasure in Houmt Souk.

ARTISTS’ STATEMENT

The island of Djerba, by its urban and natural landscape, inspires us and allows us to dream. SEE DJERBA is an opening toward new adventures for us, with a serious and qualified team. It’s also a unique moment of exchange and complicity shared between artists, accomplices, coaches, visitors, and future colleagues, in order to take part “perhaps” in the construction of a better world.

We always start our building process from a space and the association it allows, we are guided by our ideas and we build by experiencing the impact of our interventions. Our projects have in common that they address the human body as the storage of experience as well as the collective memory and its shaping. We are interested in the interplay of the individuum and the collective, we reflect on the dynamics of individual and collective identities and their impact on religious and political culture.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Their passion and commitment is their poetic vector. Houda Ghorbel and Wadi Mhiri are conceptual artists and work transdisciplinary with ceramics, photography, performance, light, installation, and interventions among others. Their concepts are reflecting on societal questions with strong links to sociocultural developments.

ARTIST’S FEEDBACK

We already took part in INTERFERENCE, and it was a great experience. After being asked by Aymen and Bettina to participate in SEE DJERBA, we were excited and immediately started thinking and creating. It was not our first time in Djerba, but the first time to work there, and the first time we find ourselves in this cross-cultural and international group. In the beginning, we felt lost, finding a site was not so easy and our quest took a big part of our stay. We found different inspiring spaces but with a big constraint until we visited the old storage in the Mediterranean Cultural Center and fell in love. It was the perfect space at the right moment. During our stay, we met new people, had deep discussions with different interesting persons, the time spent there was enriching and we made a lot of new friends, networks … The local community was friendly, welcoming and as soon as we arrived we felt home. We loved the atmosphere and ambiance. The shared catering was a great chance for meeting, exchanging, and becoming friends. The good vibes were everywhere. We think that SEE DJERBA was an opportunity to share, enrich, and create in an environment full of positive energy. The community was impressive, the volunteers were very engaged. SEE DJERBA brought light to the island. We hope to see this energy in the future.
