As a research Master’s Student in Heritage, I have also a professional Master’s Degree in Hospitality Management and an Applied Management License in Tourism Products. I also take a long leadership experience by working with many associations in Djerba and now i’m the assistant Secretary General of ASSIDJE. By working with international artists, i gain a new understanding of my personal heritage, culture and values. Additionally, I become more independent, self-reliant, and self-confident as I learn to navigate and live comfortably in a different culture. As a result, it’s easier for me to form partnerships and work effectively to tackle global or multinational challenges. But also, develop my professional skills and my leadership experience.

The focus of Julien Rathjes research is on the productive dimensions of art and aesthetic practices and its critical relation to capitalist mechanisms.

As a student of international cultural policy I am very interested in the influences art can have on society and political thoughts and processes. Coming to Djerba is a special opportunity for me as it is my third chance to be a part of discussions about art and community in Africa. The first project I participated in was in 2016 at the East African Performing Arts Market in Uganda followed by a three-month-internship at the District Six Museum in Cape Town. Both of these experiences have opened my mind to the idea of art as a political tool that can formulate statements about the social structures we live in that are sometimes hard to grasp. I am looking forward to get to know Tunisia and to learn how this country finds itself in its unique position between Europe and Africa.

My work is focused on questions about art as part of political activism, art and culture as a medium to sustain democracy and about the different perceptions and perspectives on art and culture from a european and an african point of view.

In the newly-born Tunisian cultural scene, SEE DJERBA is considered as one of the most important artistic initiatives undertaken by Tunisian civil society actors (COLLECTIF-CREATIF; Ijou Gdena: a local collective; and several local associations from Djerba). The project has witnessed many challenges: First, the organization of the event, which was based only on volunteer’s work, seemed to be a success. Indeed, we can easily feel the dynamism and the enthusiasm of the team through the activities ran. Then, the international melting-pot spirit was felt through the presence of international artists subtly integrated into the splendid “Houmet Essouk”. They were in regular contact with locals who appreciated sharing with them this unique experience and the hope for the development of cultural activities in Tunisia. Finally, the event seemed to have taken place as the team hoped, offering to visitors the opportunity to live an exceptional moment blending the beauty of Art and Djerba’s medina.

Together with Henry I’m planning to conduct an interactive project in Djerba about the personal dimensions of light and darkness and how we use these terms as metaphors in order to describe what we see and feel.

FOCUS

Beside university I’m mainly involved in theater and dance (-pedagogical) projects. I’m passionate about taking part and observing the complex processes of opening oneself up and get to know each other through movement. I’m very curious to experience in which way lightart can initiate those kind of processes – how it will impact our minds, the (public) spaces and our interaction.

I am glad to join the SEE SJERBA Program this year and I am looking forward to connect with enlightening people. Especially the trans-disciplinary convent interests me here. I think light as an additional and fleeting element, the base of visual perception is a great instrument to change (public/ private) space and our interaction with it, without transforming environment in its physical material.

I am focused on media & camera (light) and the possibility of the self representation through and by it. I would like to discover different models of self introspection or representation through light, always swinging in between the public and intimate space and our understanding of those terms. Do we have similar bounderies in self representation? What changes do we experience through different persons of surveillance behind the camera? What do you feel, when you are the one who sets the perspective and how can a public projection interact with reality? How does your light projection perform, how is the projection performed by the space and place of the screen?

I am in the bachelor degree of „cultural science and aesthetic praxis” with the subjects theatre and media at the university of Hildesheim since 2013

Since 2015 I joined the study program “cultural policy in international comparison” in Hildesheim and spent one year in Istanbul for studying and internship.

Together with Bernadette I’m planning to conduct an interactive project in Djerba about the personal dimensions of light and darkness and how we use these terms as metaphors in order to describe what we see and feel.

FOCUS
After having spent a semester in Nepal studying Buddhist philosophy and being strongly influenced by it, I explore the meaning, dimensions and effects of impermanence. This includes the ways we construct the world sourrounding us, that which we take for granted, through performing according to cultural, social and linguistic codes. To question the fragility of these alleged constants, and how this contributes to personal development and social changes is the main focus of my work.

VISUAL LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY
A workshop to explore the potential of graphic design.

STATEMENT

What does it mean to create a personal or collective identity? This question is the main topic of my work and is researched and conveyed through different, mostly visual languages and design methods. Through the inclusion of various themes, as well as the incorporation of other disciplines, the approach is always a new one. I am joining the project SEE DJERBA because I am interested to discover on-site forms of interaction between society and space, developing new strategies of identification.

I’m an architecture student, 23 years old and so excited to work on this project. Working on SEE DJERBA wasn’t a choice, and that’s for 3 simple reasons:
The first one is that when you get used to work as a volunteer for different projects you realize that by doing a small task in these things you contribute building something big.
The second one is that the INTERFERENCE experience helped me open up on something new that is in the same time so interesting: that is Light-Art.
And the last and most important thing is that after 7 years of not being active in my home-town, SEE DJERBA represents a good opportunity to pay back some of what the island deserves and contribute valorizing it.

Djerba is my home Island where i grew up. For 18 year I wanted to contribute to the cultural scene and now I got the opportunity to design an initiative with my partner Bettina. SEE DJERBA for us is an open space-time when we want to gather different cultural actors and discuss with them about art and it’s important to the context of the island. We wanted also to demonstrate how art matters, therefore we invited international artist to contribute to this frame work and think about a site-specific art-work.

Djerba is home to Aymen, my partner in this initiative. He convinced me to spent time, energy and thought on Djerba – its landscapes and its architecture, its people and its culture. Together we created SEE DJERBA as an open framework to reflect on Djerba as a living enviroment and its future. Located at the intersections of art and its contexts – whether they are social and political, cultural and historical, environmental and economical – we want to pave the way for a new environment for artists, architects, designers, cultural producers, and friends. We want to foster an open space where traditional creative roles are dissolved, where the creative disciplines are challenged, and where new concepts of art-making are shared.
